Standard operating procedure (SOP) for designing garments in a garments/apparel industry

SOP for design in garments factory

1.Receive design brief:

•Clearly define the design requirements in the brief, including garment type, style, color, size range, and any special features or embellishments.

•Identify the target audience for the garment design, such as age group, gender, or industry.
Include any relevant images, sketches, or samples to help clarify the design brief.

2.Research and brainstorming:

•Conduct research on current fashion trends, customer preferences, and industry standards.

•Collaborate with other members of the design team to brainstorm ideas and come up with creative design concepts.

3.Sketching and technical drawing:

•Create rough sketches of the garment design, including front, back, and side views, and any other necessary angles.

•Use technical drawing software to create detailed technical drawings of the garment, specifying measurements, materials, construction methods, and any other relevant details.

•Ensure that the design is feasible for production, taking into account factors such as fabric type, seam allowances, and pattern placement.

4.Fabric and trim selection:

•Research and select appropriate fabrics and trims for the design, based on factors such as functionality, durability, cost, and aesthetic appeal.

•Consider the sourcing and availability of the selected materials, and ensure that they are within the customer's budget.

5.Sample production:

•Use the finalized technical drawing and material specifications to produce a sample garment that meets the design requirements.

•Inspect the sample for fit, quality, and overall appearance, and make any necessary adjustments to the design.

6.Finalization and approval:

•Incorporate any changes made to the design during the sample production phase.

•Create a detailed production-ready design document that includes the final technical drawing, material specifications, and any other relevant information.

•Obtain approval from the customer or relevant stakeholders before proceeding with production.

7.Communication with other departments:

•Communicate the finalized design to other departments involved in the production process, including pattern making, fabric cutting, and sewing.

•Provide clear instructions and guidance to ensure that the design is executed correctly throughout the production process.

By following these detailed steps, the design team can ensure that the garment design is well-researched, feasible, and meets the customer's requirements.
